Anthem [videorecording] / Bill Viola. [1983]

Anthem presents a young girl standing in the vast chamber of Union Station in Los Angeles. The girl maintains a single piercing scream that is extended in time and shifted in frequency to produce a scale of harmonic notes. Viola relates this image and structure to the form and function of religious chants, such as Gregorian chants and Tantric Buddhist chants.
